50 Years of Title IX

50 Years of Title IX

On June 23,1972, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 is enacted by Congress, and signed into law by President Richard Nixon. The thirty-seven (37) word Amendment stated, "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."

Penn State was well in front of the curve when it came to women's athletics, starting programs in 1964-65. The Penn State library created Title IX and Penn State Women's Athletics: Success and Struggle for Equality, a digital exhibition that celebrates the 50th anniversary of Title IX regarding Penn State women's athletics.
